UK Lyme disease location database
This web page displays on a Google map the locations of Lyme disease infection for the UK.
The information on this website has been entered by people that have caught Lyme disease.
You can see where other people caught Lyme disease or if you have had Lyme disease yourself you can add the place where you caught it.
When you add your own location there are a few other questions you can also answer. That should allow this website to also show where in the UK people get better or worse support from their doctors.
The coloured tabs above let you choose an action.
Show lyme locations.
Show on the map the number of infections in geographic areas between two dates. You can zoom in the map to get more detail on a particular area.
Add your location.
Enter into the database the location where you caught Lyme disease.

This web site was created in February 2015.
There are a few sample locations out at sea so that you can see how the website works.
They have a comment of 'sample' in them. Other locations out at sea are likely to be where people did not know where they were infected.
-
Show lyme locations - running the MySQL query.
This website is hosted for free on www.awardspace.com. It has a limited data allowance.
To reduce the amount of data used on the website the MySQL queries are only run when you click the magnifying glass.
Zoom the map to include the area you want, choose the query type and dates and then click the magnifying glass to show the locations on the map.
-
Date Range.
When selecting the start and end dates to show the locations the year must be between 1901 and 2999. If you use dates outside of this range you will not get any results.
-
Dates - using partial dates.
The web page will try and interpret part of a date as a full date. For example if you enter 2000 as a date it will use that with today's day and month.
-
Map markers.
This web page limits the number of markers on the map to 2000. If your query results in more than 2000 locations then some will not display on the map. You can zoom in the map to a smaller area and re-run your query to make sure that all locations for the area are shown. Because of the time it takes to add many markers to the map a maximum limit has been set.
-
UK only ?
This website is hosted for free on www.awardspace.com. It has a limited MySQL database size. This should be large enough for the UK data but would not be large enough to contain the data for the whole world.
So although it will work for the whole world please restrict it to Lyme infections that relate to the UK only.

Add your location - scrolling up and down the webpage.
When using the map to get the place location latitude and longitude you need to use your web browser window vertical scroll bar to move up and down the webpage.
This is because once you select the map the mouse scroll wheel and keyboard Up/Down keys move the map and will alter the map center.
-
Add your location - choose a unique infection place.
To make it easier for people to see the number of infections in a location.
Use Show lyme locations first so that you can see where other people have marked locations and if there is already a marker in your location then choose a location nearby.
That will stop markers being hidden behind others.
In the future I may try using columns on the map that increase in height with the number of infections rather than use a single marker for each location.
-
Add your location - your email address and password.
This web site is designed and coded to prevent the display of your email address and password to other users.
It should not be possible for hackers to get these by methods like SQL injection.
This web site stores these in a MySQL database which is not encrypted and it also does not use HTTPS.
It is therefore a good idea to use a password on this web site that you have not used elsewhere.
It is also a good idea to use a posting email address. Ideally every person should have at least three email id's.
The first should only be used for financial things like banking. The second should be only used for family and close friends.
The third can be used for anything else. The third email would be called a posting email address.
That way if you get spam sent to your posting email address which seems to come from your bank then you can be sure it is spam.
If you do not have a posting email address you can get a new free email address from outlook.com, yahoo.co.uk or gmail.com.
-
Add your location - when you do not know where you caught Lyme disease.
If you do not know where you caught Lyme disease then choose a location out at sea.
If you do not want to show which area you live in you can choose a location out at sea for your home location.
-
Does this website give a realistic view of Lyme disease distribution?
It is more likely to show the Lyme disease distribution for people who have broadband and where there is an awareness of Lyme disease by doctors and the public.
People who do not have broadband internet access are unlikely to use this website. The same goes for people who do not know they are suffering from Lyme disease.
-
Reporting inappropriate comments.
The Misc tab > Database information contains this web sites administrator's email address.
You can use that to report any inappropriate comments that you find on the web site.
Users of this web site should take care not to enter offensive or inappropriate comments.
Comments should be useful and on topic. They can contain links to other web pages but should be plain text and not HTML.
HTML links will show as code in the map marker infowindows.
-
Left clicking on the map
If you left click on the map. You will see a new marker is created.
This is an old legacy function of the web page. It is no longer used. Those markers will show the latitude and longitude of where you clicked but have no other purpose.
This left click function may be removed at a later date.
